General and Organic GardeningOrganic Farming and Gardening provides us with nutrient-rich foods without the use of synthetic pesticides and with the practices that rejuvenate the physical, chemical, and biological composition of the soil. The objective is to replenish the soil mineral and nutrient content in the most natural ways possible. This is achieved by inter-planting crops that fix nitrogen with crops with a high demand for nitrogen and by growing cover crops that aerate the soil and protect it from erosion, naturally exclude weeds, and naturally repel pests. These beneficial cover crops are then turned under along with other soil builders in the form of compost, wood fire ash, and well-aged manure from domesticated herbivores fed organically in appropriate proportions.
A soil free of pesticides but rich in decomposing plant matter also attracts earthworms that naturally aerate the soil, accelerating the decomposition of plant matter and the release of nutrients and minerals, while converting organic matter into nutrient- and mineral-rich worm castings. A pesticide-free farm and garden also attracts natural predators that help keep pests in check. However, boosting these natural ecological defenses with imported lady bugs, praying mantises, and beneficial bacteria is not inconsistent with the philosophy or legal definition of organic farming and gardening. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organic_farming Compare the organic approach to that of traditional farming and gardening practices that rely on a handful of nutrients in artificial fertilizers that are added to make plants grow quickly and larger. This is combined with the use of a host of herbicides to suppress weeds that compete with the crop plants for nutrients and light. To this are also added insecticides to kill insects that graze on the crop plants for sustenance. Over time the soil is increasingly enriched in pesticide residues and is increasingly depleted in the natural minerals in their natural concentrations and proportions. This means that more and more artificial fertilizers have to be added to compensate for these deficiencies. Long before the crop exhibits obvious stress that requires amending the soil with the depleted mineral, its mineral, vitamin, and anti-oxidant content has been substantially diminished and their proportions changed from what is most natural. We are what we eat, so when we consume a traditionally grown diet depleted in minerals, vitamins, and anti-oxidants, our bodies become depleted in those same components, even if we eat an otherwise balanced diet. So we have to make up the deficiency by taking artificial vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants. This costs tens and hundreds of dollars a month, when we can obtain the same things and much more in natural form by eating organic foods. This costs less than what the supplements cost, while reducing your exposure to pesticides that carry over into the unprocessed and processed foods grown traditionally. Increasingly, the crops grown traditionally are genetically modified to resist herbicides and/or produce toxins to kill pest insect species. Organic farmers and gardeners will not knowingly use genetically modified seed, but seed may be mispackaged or mislabeled, and the modified genes have been known to jump from modified to unmodified crops in adjacent fields, claims by Monsanto that this was not possible notwithstanding scientific evidence to the contrary, so even the organic food supply may have been contaminated, albeit to much less extent than traditionally grown crops. The benefits of organic farming and gardening are not based on mysticism or voodoo science. It's common sense to take advantage of nature's way to achieve the most natural result for your body, while living an increasingly healthy and sustainable lifestyle that also eases the mind and nurtures the soul. Go green, grow and eat organic, buy locally, get healthy, and stay well, while reducing the environmental footprint associated with your food supply. This is a win for you and your family, your local economy, and your planet, and you know that can't be bad. Aquaponics4youHydroponics provides exact nutrients and optimal growth.
